Easy and Affordable DIY Round Jute Place Mats

Hello everyone, Happy  Monday! It’s that time of the week again and I am so excited to share with you my Jute Place mats project. These place mats add the perfect farmhouse touch and make our dining room look so homey. They were very simple to make and don’t require much of anything.

You can find very similar place mats like these at places such as pottery barn, but you will end up spending a lottt more money. Before I decided to make them myself I had been on the lookout for quite some time. But I was never able to find affordable ones that had the color and texture of rope that I was looking for. Most of them were very stiff and not as easy on the eyes. The Craft rope that I used for these produced exactly what I was looking for!

Here is a list of everything I used to make 6 - 13" diameter placemats:

*Each place mat uses 1-1/2 packages of the Fab lab craft rope (approximately 37′ each).

Step 1:

Plug your glue gun in and get it nice and hot. It shouldn’t take longer than a few minutes.

While you wait for it to heat up cut one of the packages of the craft rope in half and put aside, we will come back to this in step 3. Next, Grab your bottom of choice. This can be an old round place mat or a 13″ round of another fabric. Either will work as your base and will help guide you.

Note: You can do this project without using a bottom piece, it is just a lot harder to hide the glue mess and takes longer. I tried it both ways just to test it out and found that it is a lot easier with the bottom. Plus, your place mat is more likely to stay together and come out flat, when being glued down to the bottom.

Step 2:

Put glue on the end of your rope and place it in the very middle. Once you have that glued down you will start to wrap the rope around as you glue it. I applied the glue directly to the bottom place mat and some to the side of the rope I was wrapping it against to ensure that all sides were glued down. Continue doing this until the first package of rope is done. Make sure to press the rope down on the hot glue as you wrap it around to ensure a maximum hold and that there are no gaps. The glue dries very quickly, so keep this in mind when you are laying the glue.

PS: The glue is also very hot, so beware. I know that is common sense but my fingers suffered quite a bit with this project because I’m very impatient and was going too fast haha.

Step 3:

Now it is time to attach the rope that you cut in step 1 to what you have started. Place glue on the end of the rope attached to the bottom piece and on the bottom where the rope will rest. Once you have done this just glue down the rest until you are done.

Step 4:

Follow steps 1-3 on the other 5 place mats! Pretty simple! If you used a place mat bigger than 13″ for your bottom you can just trim off the excess!
